Bladt, Semco to supply offshore substations for 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia

November 9 (Renewables Now) - Denmark-based Bladt Industries A/S and Semco Maritime have won a turnkey order to supply offshore substations for the 2.6-GW Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project in US waters.

Under the deal, the Danish consortium will deliver three 800-MW offshore substations needed for the huge wind park’s electrical infrastructure. To be established in the 2021-2025 period, the substations will go online in 2026.

CVOW will be located about 27 miles (43 km) off the coast of Virginia Beach and is expected to be completed in 2026. The owner of the project is US utility Dominion Energy Inc (NYSE:D).

Bladt will also take care of the design, procurement and manufacturing of steel structures and jacket foundations. The company said separately it has bagged a contract to supply 176 transition pieces for the project, the production of which will be launched in March 2023 in Aalborg, Denmark. Its partner Semco Maritime will be in charge of the design, procurement and installation of electrical equipment, emergency systems and inter-array cables.

Once fully operational, the wind farm will be capable of producing electricity for about 660,000 local homes per year
